Finding the right hearing aids: A client’s experience

At The Hearing Care Centre, we’re proud to have helped hundreds of clients find their perfect hearing loss solution. Many factors go into choosing the right hearing aid and each one must be considered to find a device that fits into your life.

Your hearing loss severity, ear shape, desired look and fit, and the overall comfort are all things that we’ll talk through with you to determine which of our devices works best for you. Even after all of these checks, we’ll ask you to trial your hearing aids in varying environments to make sure that we’ve chosen correctly! Once you’ve found the right device, we’ll continue to see you regularly to make any changes to your device and its settings. This is particularly important if your hearing loss is continuing to deteriorate.

In this article, we’re delighted to share Kevin’s story, a recent client of ours. We’ve helped Kevin find suitable hearing aids for his hearing loss and have programmed them to suit his lifestyle. We continue to fine-tune these regularly to ensure that he never misses a moment!

Kevin’s Story

Finding the best hearing aids for me was not an easy process. Before I first had them 15 years ago, I thought it would be as straightforward as getting a pair of new glasses. Take an eye test, choose some nice frames, and get them fitted. Little did I know, it’s way more complicated!

The digital processing in modern hearing aids is very sophisticated and the approach varies significantly between manufacturers. Everyone’s hearing abilities vary too, so having a wide choice to try to find the best match for me meant trying them out in real situations. How well would they work in the car, a noisy restaurant, listening to TV or at a live event? The ‘prescription’ from the hearing test was a starting point each time but finding the best aids and then the best settings for all the different situations required several return visits for my audiologist to adjust and improve them.

Digital hearing aids can be adjusted in a myriad of ways but fortunately, The Hearing Care Centre audiologists in Colchester have a comprehensive knowledge of what each brand and model can do. They helped me choose my hearing aids and then adjusted them for the best results. They didn’t mind how many visits it took to get it right, and it took a few!

My hearing is slowly deteriorating over time. Hence, having a 6-month check-up is important to me. The adjustment that often follows just keeps me on a level so I can still enjoy conversations with family and friends. Everyone with hearing loss knows the experience of not being able to join in with conversations. It’s isolating, so being able to maintain it is precious.

From my experience, I can confirm that the service visits and adjustments I have received over the years are just as important as getting the right hearing aids set up properly in the first place. If you have them fitted just based on the prescription, I reckon you only get about 80% of the true benefit from having hearing aids. Given their cost and that they can last up to 5 years, it is important to get the most from them through their entire life.

Thank you to The Hearing Care Centre for making the experience both easy and pleasant.
